Learning to grow

There are days that you dread, and on those days you dread, you usually get to anticipate their coming.

Monday I got into class, and it was my worst nightmare unfolding before my eyes. We weren't prepared. We didn't know what was about to happen. For some it might not have been a big deal, but for me, it was pretty much my worst nightmare multiplied by a 100.

Have you ever done something that you just dread? The mere thought of it just makes you squirm uncomfortably?

We were told on Monday that the whole day we would be practicing physicals on each other.

This might not seem bad for some, but after they disclosed what this would encompass, I could feel myself squirming, feeling sick, and hyperventilating just to even think about it.
We were told we would get in a hospital gown, the ones that sort of fasten up, and have to be nearly naked at moments in front of our peers. Awkward. Very, very awkward.

I could feel a very prominent thought inside my head forming,  "I did not sign up for this!"
It's not so bad if you actually have a doctor you see, but to have to spend a whole day in front of these people that I know on a personal level, people that I will see every day for the next two years except for weekends and holidays, and then add this uncomfortable scene into the picture.... Well it just wasn't what I really wanted to do. I'm conservative for goodness sakes!

This concept was a stretch.
And then I thought about it, and then some more again, and then a little bit more. I thought hard.

I wonder how the patient feels to be in those places, exposed, vulnerable, and uncomfortable.
Maybe this fear is a good thing as we learn to stretch ourselves.
Maybe this fear is showing us how it feels to be human and in other people's shoes.
This fear is showing us how to feel empathy for someone, because we have once been in their same spots enduring the feeling of being on the hospital bed and vulnerable.
This raw fear was recreating a scene we might have to live in only a matter of months, but played out on the other side of the situation.

I guess things that make us think, make us think hard, will help us grow and stretch in a way that breeds compassion.

You have to find understanding in all trials, no matter what they mean, big or small.
Monday the lesson I learned is what feels to be truly empathetic towards another human being as a nurse. I will carry that in my heart as long as I live.

Empathy- the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.

The first day of the rest of your life

Tonight I'm playing a game, and it's called hurry up and write something before my laptop dies.
Yes, It's on the verge. It's been a very long day. A good one, but very long.

I guess I feel like I have to write something because it's been a bit since I have, and I feel like I have so much to expel upon these pages.

Today was a very important day for me. It was the first day of the RN program. Most of you know this, but for those of you who don't...Well it was!

I feel like my brain is scrambled in a big pot of alphabet soup. My notes seem just as scattered. My papers are littered with asterisks on which notes I NEED to remember, and I don't even know how to start to organize it all. HELP!

It's a mess.
Speaking of mess, I have to apologize at this point to the poor boys who were in the mens bathroom when I burst in. That was humiliating. First day of school, and I just stroll into the mens bathroom like I own the place. Yes....Not the proudest moment of my life. I'm realizing that somedays in nursing school, especially the first day, you might just need a coffee as big as your head to think straight.

I am grateful to see the familiar faces in class.
I am grateful that it's a small class.
I'm grateful that flexibility is a requirement of this program. Everything changes, at times within an hour, and I don't know why this fills me with comfort, but it does.

I had an amazing weekend that prepared my heart for this journey. I spent the weekend in McCall at a women's retreat. It was a refreshing, empowering, and I feel like I made so many connections with others.

I feel as if God spoke right to my heart on something I really needed to hear. Yes God, I heard you, loud and clear.

I love my church family ladies. I feel like I came home from that place knowing I had another set of sisters.
If you ladies are reading this, I love you! :]

Who doesn't like spending time in the mountains, beautiful mountains that fill you to the brim just viewing them, let alone experiencing confirmation of words you really need to hear.
It really made my cup runneth over.

My life is really about to change, and I feel like there couldn't have been a better start to this life change.

Love,
Amber

Goody Goody Gum Drops!

I felt like I was a little kid all over again today, immunizations galore!
I was never so thankful to be poked and prodded by needles.

Yesterday's worries are over. I am up to date on all my immunizations required for the nursing program, except for one, which my doctor's office explained over the phone as a piece of cake.

Yesterday I talked about how I would have to wait and see just how crazy, big God is.

Once again, He showed me that He is real and personal to me.
The nurse that helped me with my pre-employment process for work didn't have to give me all of the help that she did. She went beyond her job knowing that I needed certain things for school, and I was humbled by it.

There I was getting stabbed with needles like a little puppy and  thanking her each time with a giant smile on my face.
She told me that no one had ever said thank you so much for getting stabbed with needles so often.

I was just happy to get it done.

I'm sitting here, with a giant ache in my left arm from a tetanus shot, and I'm pretty happy about it, not going to lie.
